Inspired by my friend Karen at FriendsFavz, I’m going to be doing One New Thing a week and blogging about it on Tuesdays (if I’m good). Feel free to grab the button from her website (or here) and play along with us. Tell me what One New Thing you did this week. And if you blogged about it, you can post the link in the comments. (All comments with links have to be moderated–dang spammers–so don’t worry if it doesn’t show up right away.)

The One New Thing I did this week was attend a lecture with my friend Kelli. Now, I’ve been to a lot of author book signings where they talk about their books, and I’ve attended a number of workshops, but I haven’t been to an actual lecture since college. The Seattle Asian Art Museum sponsored David Chin, the author of Escape to Gold Mountain, a graphic novel about the history of the Chinese people who came to the US and Canada in the late 1800’s. I didn’t know much about the topic, so I was excited to hear what he had to say.

Although it was listed as a lecture, the author talked mainly about how and why he wrote the book, which was for sale after the lecture. Basically, it was a book signing talk. It just wasn’t held at a book store. During the Q&A portion, after he wrapped up his Power Point presentation, he got into much more detail about the history of the Chinese people in the Northwest with specific, and sometimes horrifying details.

All in all, it was an informative night. I have a new appreciation for the bravery and courage of people who left their homeland to make a new life for themselves and their families. I’ll definitely be watching the lecture circuit in the Seattle area for other interesting topics.
